Abstract
The following is the results of comparative observation of 287 cases of pathological jaundice out of 10570 newborn infants at the delivery room of Ewha Womans University Hospital during the period from January, 1969 to September, 1974. 1. There was no critical difference in clinical course of pathological jaundice from the observational results of others. 2. 3.3% (182 out of 5459) of male infants and 2.0% (105 out of 5111) of female infants were pathological jaundice. 3. The frequency of occurrence of pathological jaundice is much higher in cases of prematurely babies, 16.3% (121out of 740) than in those of full term babies, 1.6% (166 out of 9830). 4. In terms of hematological findings, A-O incompatibility was shown 22.5%, 23 of 102 hemolytic jaundice cases, and A-O incompatibility 14.7%, 15 cases. The cases of ABO incompatibility were frequent ones. 5. Exchange transfusion was performed more frequently in the cases of hemolytic jaundice group and mixed hepatotoxic infection group and also in full term infants. 6. The frequency of occurrance of kernicterus was shown 5.2%, 15 of 287 pathological jaundice and the 7 cases were ABO incompatibility.
